I’ve gathered the best upholstery fabric trends for 2024, because I think this is one of the best ways to refresh your home in a weekend!
You can update the look, feel and mood of any room with your choice of upholstery for your furniture.
And because this is such an easy DIY project, changing the upholstery is one of my favorite ways to play with new decor trends like velvet and sustainable materials.
Find out my thoughts on the trendiest upholstery fabrics for 2024 and the best ways to use them, as well as some classics that are always on trend.
Let’s jump in!

Why update your upholstery fabric?
Depending on the furniture, reupholstering can be an easy way to refresh your room and provide a new look!
You can give new life to chairs or stools by swapping out the cushion fabric in an afternoon.
That’s why upholstery fabric is one of my favorite ways to stay up to date on decor trends, versus a higher commitment project like painting a room or redoing cabinets.
Trends in upholstery fabric for 2024
For 2024, I see two main upholstery fabric trends: sustainable materials and velvet.

Environmentally friendly materials
The leading materials in this area are cotton, linen, acrylics (made from recycled materials) and bamboo fabrics.
Cottons and linens work great in warmer climates, as they tend to be cooler fabrics. Acrylics are highly durable and very easy to clean and can be used in most any decor.
Environmentally friendly fabrics like linen go great in many spaces such as living rooms, bedrooms, sunrooms. They can be formal or informal, depending on the surrounding decor.
Velvet
The velvet trend goes hand in hand with the renewed popularity of maximalist design. (Personally, I love this trend).
You may be surprised to hear this is also a very practical trend. Velvet is easy to clean and provides a warm touch to your home.
At the same time it’s very stylish, providing a rich texture and color.
It strikes a perfect balance between being practical, but providing a lot of style to your home.
Choose velvet for more formal settings such as living rooms and formal dining rooms, and principal bedrooms.
Classic upholstery fabric options
Of course, the classics are always on trend! You won’t go wrong with any of these choices that are always in style:
- Cotton is durable, resistant to wear and tear, budget friendly, can be found in a wide variety of fun patterns and colors and is breathable.
- Leather is a timeless classic. It’s flexible in many settings such as casual, formal, office and is very easy to clean.
- Wool is most common in a formal setting and in colder climates, providing warmth and durability.
Conclusion
Play with this year’s home decor trends by incorporating trendy upholstery fabrics like velvet and sustainable materials.
These materials can really change up the feel of your home, making it feel relaxed and breezy or warm and comforting.
Even better, you can use these trends to update the look of your home in an afternoon! Easy as that!
