Curious what trends to try out with your drapes? Keep reading!
In this blog post I’ll share the latest curtain trends for 2024, as well as my thoughts on the best times to try them.
Let’s get started!
Why you should refresh your curtains in 2024
Curtains in your home are functional AND decorative. They are functional because they provide privacy from the outside, help control outside light, and help define the function of a room.
Curtains are also highly decorative as they play an important role in expressing your style and defining the feel of each room.
Updating curtains is also a low effort way to refresh the look of your space!
Updating your curtains can take just a few minutes, for store bought curtains, or an afternoon if DIY-ing it.
Some reasons to consider a curtain refresh in your home are:
- To update or change the look of a room.
- The existing curtains may be worn, dingy or faded.
- To add height and a focal point to a room. For example, tall curtains draw the eye up, and create the illusion of a taller room.
- To change the function of a room or space, for example converting a bedroom to an office, or dividing a large open space into smaller more intimate spaces.
- To coordinate with other decor changes: Some examples of changed décor that may warrant updating your curtains.
- Changing bedding (bedspread, pillowcases, etc.)
- Changing the paint color of the walls.
- Updating a child’s room to a teen room
Types of Curtains
Before we look at curtain trends for 2024, It is important to decide which style of curtain best fits with the intended function and décor of the room. While there are many different styles of curtains, there are 3 primary timeless categories of curtain styles.
- Pleated Drapes – Often used in traditional and formal décor. (need picture)
- Rod Pocket Curtain – This is a simple, versatile style, and can be used in both formal and informal décor. (Need picture)
- Grommet Curtain – This style is also versatile and will fit in most decorating styles. (need picture)
The Trendiest Curtain Looks for 2024
Some timeless trends that continue to be popular in 2024 are:
- Pleated Drapes – Particularly in more formal settings such dining rooms or living rooms.
- Simple Curtains (like rod pocket curtains) fit into a wide variety of decorating styles.
- Neutral and natural colors – Some examples are white, beige and light gray.
- Layered curtains – A combination of drapes with sheers, providing multiple functions: light blocking when desired or filtered light and privacy.
Some emerging trends that are growing in popularity in 2024 are:

Eco-Friendly fabric
Natural materials such as linen, cotton, bamboo fibers, wool, hemp and jute are very popular.
Two of the most common examples are linen and cotton. These styles can fit very well into an airy, summery décor style.
Wool, on the other hand, is an eco-friendly fabric that will still go well with a more traditional, formal style.
Bamboo curtains provide an organic natural feel to your casual décor.
Recycled polyester and modal are both highly versatile fabrics that can coordinate with a variety of decorating styles. While these aren’t necessarily “natural” fabrics, they both have some sustainability benefits.
Vibrant colors
Vibrant colors such as emerald green and burnt gold are used to add a punch of color and flair to a room.
Two-Tone Colors
Two-tone Colors are popular. A common example of two-tone colors includes using different shades of the same color, with the stronger, more intense color at the bottom and the lighter shade towards the top of the curtain.
Color Block
Using two or more different colors in different sections of the same curtain creates a dramatic flair and custom look and adds interest to the curtain.
Can you DIY these trends?
While it is possible to make your own curtains if you have some sewing experience, my preference is to buy readymade curtains in the style and color that I want, and then spend my efforts customizing the look of the curtains.
Some easy ways to customize the look are:
- Adding sheers to drapes: To add sheers to drapes, you simply buy the sheers and you can hang both the drapes and sheers using a double curtain rod. Make sure the sheers are on the rod closest to the window.
- Color blocking:: This technique involves some simple sewing. Simply add a panel of a contrasting color to the top, bottom or middle of your curtain. Or you can purchase color block curtains.
- Converting a single color curtain to a two-tone curtain. You can add a panel of a complementary color to your curtain with some simple sewing, or you can purchase two tone curtains.
Here’s an example of a curtain DIY project I did where I customized store bought curtains with a small amount of sewing. Check it out here.
Final Thoughts
There are so many fun curtain trends to try in 2024, as well as more classic options.
Whether you want to add a pop of color, or experiment with color blocking, curtains are a simple way to refresh a space.
