So let’s jump in!
Should you repaint your cabinets in 2024?
If you’re looking for a home refresh, repainting your cabinets might be the perfect project for you!
Some reasons to consider painting your kitchen cabinets:
1) One of the most visible parts of the home: The kitchen is always a good place to consider redecorating, since in most homes, the kitchen is the heart of family life and even entertaining.
2) Refresh without a complete overhaul: If your kitchen looks tired and dated, painting the kitchen cabinets is a good way to refresh the look of your kitchen without spending the money to replace the cabinets.
3) The “domino” effect: If you’ve recently changed décor or paint in other parts of your home that are visible from your kitchen, you may want to paint your cabinets to coordinate with the updated décor in the rest of your home.
This is especially true if you have an open-plan home!
Are kitchen cabinets a good place to test out color trends?
Normally, I would say your cabinets are not the most ideal place to test color trends, as painting cabinets can be labor and money intensive as well as disruptive to the household while the painting project is in process.
However, if you’re desperate for a kitchen refresh, painting your cabinets might be less drastic a change than installing completely new cabinets.
While this post is about the trendiest cabinet colors for 2024, you’ll see that color trends for kitchen cabinets don’t change every year. And a lot of the trending colors are neutrals!
So you can easily select a color that will last you a few years and that feels up to date.
The trendiest kitchen cabinet colors for 2024
Some of the hottest for kitchen cabinet color trends in 2024 are:
Green
Green seems to be a popular choice among color experts for 2024, because it reflects nature and is appealing for most tastes and styles. A popular hue of green is in the mid-range, such as pewter green.
Black
Black cabinets are thought of as the “new white” for cabinet color choices, for its versatility and neutrality.
Similar to white cabinets, black cabinets have the ability to adapt to many styles of décor, with accessories and accent colors.
Using black as a base and adding other color elements, such as wood finishes can provide a well-balanced, sophisticated elegant look to your kitchen that will have broad appeal.
I recently added black elements into my open-face cabinets for a striking look that balances the classic look of white with trendy black. Check out my project here.
White
White may be intimidating for some people, especially if you have the standard flat white on your cabinets and walls, which can make your kitchen look sterile.
However, there are many hues of white to choose from, ranging from cool whites to warm whites that allow you to add some personality to your cabinets, while maintaining the lighter feel of the kitchen.
White is also a highly adaptable, neutral color that can coordinate with many styles of décor and can be complemented easily with accent colors and accessories.
Wood
Wood finishes will always be in style; that’s why we listed it in our timeless kitchen cabinet colors roundup!
However different finishes of wood will trend at different times. Lighter (blonde) finishes were popular in the 1950’s and again in the mid 1980’s, while darker finishes were popular in the early 2000’s.
Current trends for wood color finishes are in the mid-range of colors, such as antique walnut. Wood finishes are a very neutral palette that allow you to coordinate with other colors in your kitchen and adjoining rooms.
Another current trend is two-tone finishes: for example, the cabinets around the perimeter of the kitchen may be white, while the cabinets on the island could have a medium wood finish.
Note: Changing a wood finish is more labor intensive, as it usually involves stripping the old finish off, sanding and staining.
Gray
Gray is another color that transcends fads and time. Its neutrality and range of shades ranging from light gray to charcoal gray makes it very adaptable to almost any style of kitchen and décor.
While gray is a timeless color, the lighter shades of gray are popular now, including: “greige”, which is a blend of gray and beige.
Other ways to test out 2024’s trendiest kitchen colors
If you’re not ready to paint your cabinets but you want to test out some of this year’s trendiest colors, try swapping out some of your decorative elements like kitchen towels, vases, candles, serving trays, cutting boards.
If you are pretty sure you want to paint your cabinets, but want to test the waters before committing to trendy color, try these tips:
1) Use some scrap wood and paint it the color you are considering for your cabinets, and place the painted wood in your kitchen to see how it works with the lighting.
2) Paint some sheets of white cardboard the color you are considering and after they are dry, tape them up on your cabinets to see the effect of your lighting and how the color works with your other kitchen colors.
